Who We Are & What We Do
The Friends is a group of volunteers who help the town library be all that it can be. Established in 1986, we have become a 501(c)(3) organization that raises money for services, special items, and programs beyond the library’s annual budget, while promoting the joy of reading and use of other media. A board (see below) leads our membership of nearly 175 single and family members.
In 2018, we are proud of raising nearly $13,000 at our annual book sale and growing our membership by 59%. These efforts enable us to:
Fund all programs for children and adults
Co-sponsor Museum Pass with the Scotch Plains library Friends
Purchase computers, projectors, and similar technology
Support subscriptions like the one to eLibraryNJ for ebooks and audiobooks
Contribute to the renovation of the children’s room
Provide plants the Garden Club installs downtown for passersby to enjoy all summer
We also supply refreshments for programs and fund small requests that would otherwise go unfulfilled.
2019 Friends Fall Book Sale
The best book bargains ever are right around the corner! Starting September 19, Fanwoodians will be able to purchase at rock-bottom prices books, DVDs, and books on tape for all ages. Teachers get a 10% discount. All proceeds go to the Fanwood Memorial Library to pay for electronic devices, programming, and services that aren’t covered in the regular budget.
The annual sale is made possible by donations of gently used materials. We will not accept old, smelly, or moldy books because we can’t sell them and must pay to recycle them.
The book sale is a fun way for Scouts, students, and families to serve their community. To volunteer,
write us at: email@example.com.
Held every September, the book sale is the Friends primary fundraiser, and volunteers are key to its success. We need help with sorting, setup, and selling. To join the fun, contact us!

Volunteer at the Book Sale
The BOOK SALE is held every September. This is our primary fundraiser for the library, and we need your help to make the sale a success. If you are interested in being a volunteer or chairing a committee or the book sale itself, please contact Carol Campell firstname.lastname@example.org We need help with sorting, setup and selling. Also, think about involving a friend in the sale. It will ensure successful staffing.
We really need you, and the volunteers always have a good time!
Note to Dealers: We place no restrictions on scanners but require an orderly selection and buying process. We look forward to seeing you on Members Night (you can join at the door) or any other sale day and appreciate your business.
The Friends board does most of the organization’s work. But other great volunteers also help out, especially at the book sale.

Our spring membership drive begins when we mail our newsletter and membership form to each Fanwood household. But we welcome members at any time! Many people join because they are library lovers. Others sign up because they appreciate how much the library provides in exchange for their tax-dollar investment.
You may enroll online or at the library.
Families may join the Friends for $20 and individuals for $15.
Become a Sponsor for $25 and get a Friends mug or water bottle plus all member benefits.
A contribution of $50 or more will add your name to our OVER-THE-TOP list and qualify you to receive
a Friends umbrella, plus all member benefits.
Join our board and reap even more benefits! Meet other people interested in ideas, literacy, and our community.
Or volunteer for a committee: Special Events, Publicity, Book Sale, Programs, or Membership.
Your Friends membership card entitles you to:
First pick at our annual book sale

10% (or more) discount from our growing list of these local merchants:

In 2018 we held a special membership drive called Growing Friends, hoping to recruit 100 members by July 4.
While we didn’t quite make it to that number this summer, we have welcomed 116 members as of October 31, an increase of 59% over the same period in 2017!
Welcome to those who joined us for the first time. And thank you to all who renewed their membership or rejoined after a lapse. You are what helps us achieve our goal of supporting the Fanwood Memorial Library.
The Friends welcome donations in many forms. You don’t have to be a member to donate in a small or big way. You can donate online here.
Small donations may be part of a family celebration and remembrance. Parents could donate a book for a child’s birthday or graduation. Friends and family might start a collection for a loved one with a special interest.
Distributing assets accumulated over a lifetime often requires expert advice. Planned giving may make a larger gift to the Friends possible, while lowering inheritance tax and leaving a legacy.
Give While You Shop
Amazon enables shoppers to support the Friends through AmazonSmile.Instead of going directly to Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com and select “Friends of the Fanwood Memorial Library.” Then shop as usual. AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible items to the Friends.
As of November 2018, buyers have added more than $340 to our coffers. Thank you!
The Friends publish and snail-mail the newsletter each spring to every Fanwood residence. Inside, you’ll find a form to join us. Your membership qualifies you to also receive periodic updates via email.
