Equality of Access Policy

The Fanwood Memorial Library encourages the use of our facility by all members of the community we serve regardless of any physical limitation or disability whether physical or developmental. The Fanwood Memorial Library building was constructed in 1951 and added to in 1980 and as such has limited accessibility to persons in wheel chairs and those with other physical limitations or disabilities. In order to provide equal access, we will employ any reasonable alternative method that will enable any physically limited, disabled or mobility-impaired patron access to the services and facilities offered by the Library.

The Fanwood Memorial Library currently affords provides access for physically limited, disabled and mobility-impaired patrons to the main floor of the building via a ramp from the parking area on Forest Road. The main floor houses the adult fiction and nonfiction collections, periodicals, reference materials, audio books, videos, computers for searching the Library’s holdings on-line, Internet access, the Teen Corner, work tables, etc., as well as space for programming. The lower level of the Library houses the Children’s Department and the Fanwood Room which is used for programs, meetings and other events. There is no ramp, elevator or lift available to provide access to the lower level.

For access to books and other materials in our collection (videos, DVDs, books-on-tape, etc.) on the lower level, the Library staff will, upon request, retrieve those materials for persons who are physically limited, disabled or mobility-impaired.

For access to services, meetings, events or programs on the lower level, reasonable alternative methods of access to these functions will be provided upon notice received by the Library two (2) business days in advance of the scheduled event.

The Library will accommodate Patrons with valid Library cards that are homebound or physically unable to come to the Library through a variety of Homebound Services managed by the Friends of the Fanwood Library. (see Section 2.3.2).

Please contact the Library with any concerns, questions and/or requests at (908) 322-6400 or by e-mail at: library@fanwoodLibrary.org. Any other correspondence may be directed to Library Director, Fanwood Memorial Library, 14 Tillotson Rd., Fanwood, NJ, 07023.
